According to the Cyprus Building Code, glass panels located in "critical areas" such as:

  • Above floors in internal and external glass curtain walls,
  • Above floors in glass doors and adjacent fixed glass panels located at the front of a building,
  • Glass panels applied in bathtubs or showers,
  • In mirrors located at an accessible point for the human body,
  • On railings or stairs with integrated glass panels,

The ‘’critical areas’’ may also include:

  • Large areas of continuous transparent glass panels in buildings,
  • Areas of continuous mirrors, where they form part of internal or external walls such as doors in event spaces, shops, offices, factories, public spaces, or other non-residential buildings,

where people move through the space, and the presence of the glass panel may not be perceived, causing a person to walk into it and collide with it.

These glass panels must meet the appropriate conditions regarding:

  1. Safe breakage
  2. Durability
  3. Installation of safety railings
  4. Adequate marking/indication of their presence.

A person's collision with a glass surface that does not meet the above conditions makes the property occupier/owner liable for the injury and responsible for compensating the victim.
